An online article about preserving the NASA materials left behind on the Moon by the Apollo missions cites the Confederate Ship's wreckage as evidence that the U.S. retains ownership of the lunar left-behinds:

The wreck of the Alabama was deemed U.S. property because the United States succeeded to all Confederate property after the Civil War ended and the United States had not expressly abandoned the wreck.Read the entire article in The Space Review here.
