Sunday Focus: Relative Speed

As each new New Year approaches, I am forever shaking my head in amazement at how fast the past year, or two years, or decade have passed. And this one is the same.

2011  2012  2013  2014 2015

A social scientist I interviewed once said it was the relative time between one annual event and the next that mades the time seem to pass faster. When you are six years old, the length of time between one Christmas and the next is 1/6 of your lifetime. At 55, it is a much smaller slice.
As we age, so do our physical surroundings.
The latest renovation project on Dexter Avenue in Montgomery is underway. Yet the photos from this era will look as hopelessly old and old-fashioned a century from now as this old Harper's Magazine sketch looks to us now. Even the "modern" colorized photo at the bottom feels terribly dated...and it is! It's from the 60's, half a century ago.

Happy New Year, slightly in advance.
