It is one of six cities that are in the running to host the 2016 event.
The cities are Birmingham, Cleveland, Columbus, Philadelphia, Phoenix and New York, with a Brooklyn site.
The party requirements include:
A cross-section of full-service hotels with a commitment of at least 17,000 to 18,000 rooms and 1,000 suites within 30 minutes travel time from the Convention Complex during peak traffic hours..
Reports ABC-News:
Birmingham represented a surprise bid and would bring Democrats into reliably Republican territory. The last Democratic presidential candidate to carry Alabama was Jimmy Carter in 1976.
The convention needs 17-18,000 rooms. Birmingham claims 15,000.

There you go, Tim. Asking the tough questions. If Larry Langford were still in charge, He'd probably be drumming for the building of new hotels. Speaking of Larry, wasn't he the one who launched the initiative for Railroad Park, which is now becoming a showcase for the city? I may be wrong, but I seem to recall the work beginning when he was in office.
ReplyDeleteOne positive note might be, if B'ham were to get the nod from the DEMs, we could invest in more public transit as well as more hospitality measures. It would be more feasible than a domed stadium.
