Dear Christian Science Monitor

     All is NOT well with the Republic, despite your glowing column about Memorial Day informing your readers that there used to be separate memorial days for Northerners and Southerners, but that ended with the big wars:


It took a much larger conflict, World War I, to finally bring North and South together in memory of their war dead. The holiday expanded to include a commemoration of all US soldiers who paid the ultimate price, in all the nation’s wars.

     Please let writer Peter Grier know that at least in Alabama, there is a Confederate Memorial Day every year, and that it is an official state holiday.
