Flood View from Above, and The Joy of Flying

I spent some time in the air this past week...including flying over the swollen South Carolina rivers and streams, as you can see in the photo I took through the window.

CBS News reported it as their top story... all-time extensive flooding in that state. The story includes this comment from their Governor:

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley was asked if she takes exception to a local newspaper calling the dam safety "flawed."
"I think there will be a lot of people with a lot of opinions. What I will tell you is this is a thousand-year flood and we have thousands of dams in this state. There will be time later to talk about how we could've done better," Haley said.

Right.
Meanwhile, the act of flying has not gotten any better, at least according to my experience. All three flights in my outward  journey were delayed. And seating was anything but comfortable.

And it could get a lot, lot worse, according to another CBS story.

The story quotes an Airbus patent on how to cram even more passengers into small spaces.

flying is already bordering on hellish. But the patent points out that it plans to "still more efficiently use the space in a passenger cabin" by using the space above the heads of the poor souls sitting on the floor.

Airbus is about to begin assembling passenger planes in South Alabama. We can only hope the company will not make their new plant in Mobile a part of their sardines proposal.

[UPDATE on Friday 10-9-15: The Washington Post was thinking along the same lines and posted a story titled The Incredible Shrinking Airline Seat.]

  1. One factor in our decision to move to Maryland last year was the increasing frustrations of flying to visit our kiddies and grand-kiddies.

Southwest has nonstop from Birmingham to Baltimore. Nice, except for the hour and a half drive to BHM.

But they replaced the seats with smaller versions with less leg room and seat room. Bye-bye Southwest!
