Saturday Data: Fighting Fat in France! Oui!

On the surface, obesity does not seem to ba a major problem in France. And the stats back that up---only 15% or so of adults are considered obese.

In the U.S. that figure is almost 37%!

Yet French officials have banned "free refills" of soft drinks as a way of reducing that obesity figure.

The New York Times report on the decision includes a more striking obesity figure for the French population:

"...57 percent of men and 41 percent of women 30 to 60 years old were overweight or obese, according to a report released in October by Bulletin Épidémiologique Hebdomadaire, the French medical journal."

Perhaps it's that delicious french cuisine and wines!

In Alabama the obesity rate is....even higher than the U.S. average, and soft drink industry has a slew of lobbyists at work to make sure the State Legislature doesn't pass any bills that would reduce soft drink sales.
