Alabama's "Green State" Rank.

We're 46th! We're 46th!

Alabama is ranked toward the bottom when it comes to being a green state, and you can find examples right here in the State Capitol.
Montgomery used to have a fairly broad recycling program, with residents putting cans and newspapers etc in orange plastic bags to be picked up. But the program was canceled because Mayor Todd Strange said the program, which hired special-needs adults to do the separating, was only sending a relatively small percentage to recycling. The rest went to the landfill.

Then came a giant $35-million recycling plant operated by a for-profit company starting four years ago this week. All of the trash was dumped at the IREP facility, which then separated the recyclables using magnets and lasers.

It failed after a year or so when prices paid for the recycled paper fell.
After bankruptcy proceedings, the city took possession of the plant in January of this year.

Now the city is negotiating with several possible operators.
In the meantime residents can carry some recycled goods to collection points, but few do.
