Whatever Happened to Home Rule?

Ask many Alabama politicians if they favor "Home Rule", and you'll get--- at least--- a lot of platitudes about the concept, if not the execution.
Now an important home rule lawsuit has been given new life by the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals. As the NY Times reports:

"The City Council in Birmingham, home to the state’s largest black population, voted to raise the city’s minimum wage to $10.10 an hour from the federal minimum of $7.25 following a campaign by civil rights and social service organizations and strikes by local fast-food workers as part of the Fight for $15 movement. Then, just days before the raise was to take effect, the state legislature rushed through a bill nullifying the authority of cities to adopt any local wage ordinances."

But now the 11th circuit has backed the right of the city to go to court against the state.
And a lot of other states and cities are watching to see what happens.
Watch what state and local elected officials say. Some will argue that allowing cities to set various minimum wages would create financial chaos and companies would rather leave Alabama than deal with it.
Which is why we have standard local sales taxes and fees, from city to city and county to county. Right? Exactly.
