Alabama: Worst Performing on Mental Health Background

Alabama is one of the states ranked as "worst performing" by the mayors against gun violence group. You can see their interactive map of all of the states here.
The group says only 248 mental health records were submitted as part of 336,102 background checks conducted in the Alabama in 2011.
By comparison, 180,338 records were submitted as part of 331,468 background checks in Virginia, which was ranked among the best states. Some of Virginia's activism came after the shooting at Virginia Tech.

The group writes:

"....for background checks to be effective, states need to submit millions of missing (mental health) records to the national background check databases. Every missing record is another tragedy waiting to happen."
