"Defining gender

Starting Wednesday, Alabama law will officially say that sex - female or male - is fixed at birth and is exclusively based on reproductive organs, not gender identity.

Supporters said the definition will give the state the legal authority to protect women’s privacy in spaces such as such as restrooms.

The bill, sometimes called the What is a Woman Act, drew some opposition from those who said it would lead to more marginalization of transgender men and women.

The law is aligned with an executive order issued by President Trump on the first day of his new term."
