Laptops for Third World Alabama

If a review of ultra-cheap laptops by an Associated Press writer is any indication, The Birmingham School Board's proposal to buy and distribute thousands of the machines to school kids may be heading for choppy waters. The writer tested a variety of the so called "$100 laptops",
including the XO that Birmingham is buying, and found them difficult for her tech savvy family to use, She wonders how they'll work in the Third World Countries they are destined for. Birmingham School officials might ask the same questions! Read the review and see what you think. I asked Alabama School Superintendant Joe Morton about the laptop issue on tonight's For The Record, which you can watch at 8:00pm (or later online).

  1. I will be curious to view the online interview about the OLPC. Santa brought one for my daughters and the 8-yr-old still uses it about every 3rd day. I agree that it was a challenge to get connected to our household WiFi, but a quick check of their wiki and I worked around the issue. The hardest issue is the flash driver... to install the correct Adobe player for webkinz and youtube, does require a strong comfort with a UNIX operating system -- something that the average owner will not have, no matter how simple the instructions for upgrading.

  2. I was impressed by what Dr. Morton had to say with regards to school funding vs. prison funding and how we would need fewer prisons if everyone has a decent education. I've been saying that for years. I plan to blog the show later today and write Dr. Morton as well to see if he is interested in supporting any bills that I am working on this session.

    Great show as always Tim!!
