I've been asked about the "Presumed Guilty" program I produced last year on APT that focused on the media treatment of a Montgomery day-care operator who was charged with the sexual abuse of two boys in his care. The questions come because C.J. Williams faces new, similar charges in Pensacola, Florida. A couple of thoughts:"Presumed Guilty" was a critique of the media in light of the presumption of innocence granted all defendants, not a defense of C.J. Williams. And Williams is STILL presumed innocent in Florida, regardless of the previous charges here, of which he was acquitted. A Lieutenant with the sheriff's office in Pensacola says one of the charged against Williams is lying on an employment application. The Montgomery Advertiser quotes him as saying "He (Williams) mentioned nothing (in the application) about prior sexual charges or other crimes." Uh, would that be the ones he was acquitted of? Under what condition is a job applicant required to list charges as opposed to convictions? Anyway, the courts will be the final arbiter in Florida, as they were in Alabama. Also to update "Presumed Guilty"...Williams was also charged here with "Identity Theft" in the aftermath of the trial and his acquittal. Those charges have now been dropped.
Hi Tim, could you please post an update to this story stating that I was acquitted of the charges in Florida? Thank you.
ReplyDeleteC.J.!
