MMMM #24 - Small Town (IN)security
During speaking engangements and on FTR, I've heard myself say any number of times that the small-town newspapers of Alabama seem to be weathering the financial storm better than their larger brothers and sisters in the state's Birminghams and Mobiles and Montgomerys. I said they were in less danger because their product..."uber-local" news, was not being replaced online. Yet an item in today's NY Times tells the story of two small papers in Connecticut that should also be the beneficiary of that protected beat. As the story reads, they are not. The implication is troubling, not only for Alabama's small towns, but also for one of The Retirement System of Alabama's big investments...Community Newspapers Holdings. They own hundreds of papers like those in the story.
