Does Ted Stevens = Don Siegelman?
Word this morning from NPR and CBS that Attorney General Eric Holder has decided to drop charges against Alaskan Senator Ted Stevens because of charges of prosecutorial misconduct. Could this lead the way to charges being dropped against former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman? And what of Healthsouth founder Richard Scrushy? Could Holder have decided dropping the charges against Stevens, a Republican, will ease the way to free Democrat Siegelman? Like Siegelman, Stevens was convicted, defeated for re-election, and was in the process of appealing. If anything, there was much less direct evidence against Siegelman than against Stevens, and similar allegations of misconduct by prosecutors. There have been Senate Judiciary Committee hearings on the Siegelman case in which allegations of misconduct by prosecutors have been aired, and in recent weeks Bush White House aide Karl Rove had finally agreed to testify about Siegelman and other allegations involving the Justice Department, though that hasn't happened yet. Siegelman is free on bond pending his appeal. A three-judge panel of the 11th Circuit has upheld all but two of the charges against him, and last week his lawyers asked for a hearing before the full court ( not including former Alabama Attorney General Bill Pryor, who has recused himself).

Yes they should. Would it help to write to Eric Holder? why hasn't Obama replaced the REpublican appointed judge in this case? Don will face SENTENCING by Laura CAnary, whose husband is the best friend of Karl Rove... most presidents immediately replace these judges, why hasn't OBama? at least with an interim appointee until the permanent ones can be approved by Congress?
ReplyDeleteCanary's recusal of herself & entire office in the case of Troy King's federal grand jury investigation are more telling than perhaps this one.
ReplyDeleteBut then of course, I have been fully convinced from the outset that Alice Martin's failure to obtain a conviction in our nation's (to date) ONLY Sarbanes-Oxley prosecution (Richard Scrushy) was NOT a feather in her Republican prosecutorial cap.
So what's a Martin failure to do? Go figure? Quid pro quo for Scrushy & Siggy? Why, even Scrushy had held a seat on the CON Board under previous governors!
She should've changed venue to Wall Street, where pecuniary intricacies are better understood.
It was a stretch, but she got what she wanted - a two-fer after a failure.
I wonder... is Scrushy still attending the predominately Black church congregation where he sought refuge? (If the Black community knew they were being used, they just wanted his money. If not, they were ignorant. I think it's the former.)
Scrushy was found Not Guilty... by public opinion.
Siegelman is the ONLY man to ever hold the top four offices of this state. He is also a Georgetown graduate, and Oxford University / Rhodes scholar.
It'll take a while, but I think it will take a while for the stink & damage of the previous administration to totally dissipate.
the justice system is evidently more garbled than ever right now; they should simplify the law as much as possible for the sake of average people
