Having lived in the relatively small city of Montgomery for a decade now, and in Alabama for three decades, I apparently have forgotten what living in a truly large city is like. I heard a story today about a fifteen year-old public school student in Chicago who was beaten and shot to death, his body run over by a car and then burned by gang members for no apparent reason. So tonight I went to the front page of
The Chicago Sun-Times, and the story was nowhere to be found. Oh,
I found it after searching their website, but it was nowhere on their "front page." I tried
The Chicago Tribune, again, same result, although
their story seemed more complete when I did find it. But what did I expect? The body was found
way back on Saturday afternoon. In fact it turns out that as far as news goes, it might not have even made the front page the day it happened. You see since the school year began there have been
35 Chicago Public School students murdered. 35. So despite the burning of the body, I guess it's kinda old hat in Chicagoland. Another kid dead. What's on TV tonight?
Wanna go to a movie?
Wanna move to Montgomery?
In Montgomery people say "Wanna move to Prattville?"
I don't know what they say in Prattville when the killing occurs, as it does. There.
And everywhere.
