A New Feature
In addition to "Literally Watch" and the "Monday Morning Media Memo", this blog will feature a poem each Sunday about the mess we in the media find ourselves in. Think of it as a literary companion to the MMMM. It got started on Friday when I was moved to write and post a poem about a current American poet from Wyoming who is missing near a Japanese volcano, and the remains of a long lost poet found in Utah. It wasn't my first poem...I actually published a trio of chapbooks of poetry decades ago. Anyway, the poems will be short and at the very least, painless (I hope). And let me beat the first commentator to it: "Tim, you really do have way too much time..."
Here's the second in the series, counting the earlier referenced one as, well, one, even though it was posted on a Friday. I'm calling the series NewSverse:
The Multitude of Sins
“We regret to announce,”
is the way they begin
to explain the need for slices
and cuts and amputations
of staff.
No wonder they call it
severance pay.

Severance... cutting off the nose to spite the face.
ReplyDeleteHey, Tim!
About that picture on the front page... who's that skinny kid in the jungle fatigues wearing sunglasses (were they G.I.)?
Yeah - I figured it was you.
But, the real questions are, who are the children, what village was that, and what month was it?
Curious, but could you name a favorite experience from Viet Nam? And what about a least favorite (or hated)?
You were in the Army - what corps? AG, Quartermaster - were you combat or non-combat, etc.?
How did your service change your life, your outlooks, perspectives, relationships, etc.?
Were you drafted, if so, do you remember your number - or did you volunteer? How long did you serve? Where'd you attend Basic and AIT?
Were you doing journalism for the Army? If so, did you dream of doing a "big gig" at AFRN (Armed Forces Radio Network)?
Or, did you do something entirely different... like 11B? Do you have a CIB (Combat Infantryman's Badge)?
What do you see as journalism's role in popular culture, and where do you see it going? Where would you like it to go? What responsibility does journalism have to the citizenry?
Whom in the world, the nation, state and history would you like to interview, and why?
I know this stuff doesn't rhyme... so what?
