New Candidate
The University of Alabama law professor who brought morals into the question of reforming the Alabama tax system is running for a seat in the Alabama State Legislature. Susan Pace Hamill argued in favor of Amendment One, calling the existing tax system sinful. Hamill will run for the House Seat being vacated by Dr. Robert Bentley. Examiner.com in Birmingham actually broke this story a week ago, but today is her official announcement. Bentley is running for Governor.

"... morals into the question..."?
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness! Law and morals!?
What's this state coming to?!
Quite seriously, of course, morals and law are inseparable, simply because frequently, behavior is linked to the condition of one's spiritual heart. Is it calloused, or tender?
Yes, I know that there are some whom would argue otherwise, particularly considering that sales of narcotics within a school zone, production & possession of obscene material using minors are felony offenses. Of course, if we legalized and taxed it... (Excuse me, please. Qua est vomitorium?)
Having read Professor Susan Pace Hamill's thesis some time ago, I find no disagreement with her assertion, nor her remedies.
Concern and care for one another - our neighbors (recall the famous, 2000 year-old question, "Who is/are my neighbor(s)?") - is a hallmark of our humanity. Of course, for the less-than-well-read, the answer is: "The one who had mercy on him, and treated him kindly," and, "Go and do similarly."
Fact of the matter is, "red and yellow, black and white, we..." all live in the same neighborhood.
