Ink on the child

Talk about a loaded case...a California judge is trying to decide if a father violated the law---and if so, what his punishment should be---for having his son tattooed.
Here are the complicating factors.
  • The Father is a gang member.
  • The tat is a gang symbol.
  • The boy is seven.
  • And the punishment goes as high as life in prison.

We do allow parents to circumcise infant boys...pierce the ears of minor girls...give newborns names that may be a lifelong burden. Is it different to ink them? Supposing the tat was a christian cross?

[Note: the tat in the photo has nothing to do with the story.]
