I was just a bit troubled when I saw people celebrating Monday morning, flags waving and cheers erupting, about the death of Osama Bin Laden.
I wasn't alone. The Shelby County Reporter has a story about ministers "struggling" with the incident and how to deal with it.
The world is a better place without him...but still...
When is it OK to celebrate death?
[UPDATE: What the Dalai Lama says about the issue. ]

I think that the "celebrations" were actually society's psychological safety valves, We had waited for this day for nearly ten years.
ReplyDeleteI admit that I was elated at the news but also saddened that this action was necessary.
For a parallel we might look at the Hiroshima and Nagasaki A bombs, which caused much suffering but ultimately prevented far more suffering.
By the way, I flat-out do not believe that the Pakistani authorities didn't know that bin Laden was in that compound.
Regardless of your religious belief, here's a good discussion of this question:

I have read a lot of commentary online yesterday and today. Even thought there was that initial outbreak of cheers, I am glad to say that virtually every comment I have found online takes this same circumspect approach that is reflected in that Shelby County Reporter article.
