Devil be GONE!

     A pastor in Georgia took members of his church to protest the devil image used as a mascot by a High School. And he was arrested for protesting without a permit.
     Really.
     He's defending himself in court.

  1. Two thoughts:
    1.) A man who represents himself in court has a fool for an attorney, and;
    2.) I recollect having read an item some years ago about the nature of naming sports teams, and how team names in other nations (Aboriginal Australia & Africa) took upon decidedly different names... by comparative American standards. While some here decried the Redskins, for example, they wanted other names/mascots to substitute. However, the mascots for the outback & tribal groups were - hold onto your hat - the penis, the teeth, etc.

    Perhaps in light of that, the good pastor might actually prefer a devil. It's the devil you know, versus the devil you don't know. Right?

  2. I dislike team names that make reference to the devil, Southern colonels, stereotyping (Washington Redskins), etc.

    When I attended Simpson College in Iowa in the 1960s, their teams were named the Redmen and the girls' teams, the Lady Redmen. (Why not Redwomen?)

    About 10-15 years ago the college changed all team names to "Storm."
    Gender neutral, good for any sport, and not offensive to any group. End of problem.

  3. Than again there;s the character "Storm" in The X-Men, but that's another story...(-:

  4. A permit could be a way of mediating rights. Do we really want to hear the Massed Pipe Band of the WeAin'tGonnas at 3 AM? Though a mariachi band at say 8AM thru certain neighborhoods might be entertaining.

  5. Bassel, this is Alabama. Scott Beason & Co. is going to ban mariachi bands because the music is Mexican, not Murrican.
