Consumer Reports is out with their ranking of the best and worst supermarkets....and as far as those in many Alabama cities, Publix is toward the top while Wal-Mart is toward the bottom.
I'm a careful, critical supermarket shopper, and you know they are right at least on the level of customer service. At Publix, I've had employees stop and take me halfway across the store to find an obscure item. At Wal-Mart, I once had a checkout clerk suggest I was buying a bottle of wine for a younger (but over 40) friend who was with me! I'll admit that is a more extreme example than the positive I mentioned about Publix, but still!
I don't subscribe to Consumer Reports, though it is a fine publication, so I have not been able to see the entire list of supermarkets.
Supermarkets profit margin is about a penny on the dollar. Think about that.
The best supermarket is identified as Wegman's, in which I have shopped in New Jersey. And it is a joy and a good price.

Ayup on Publix!
ReplyDeleteI scour their newspaper ad inserts on Wednesday mornings and make a list, cut out the "one cent special" coupon, and trot down to Zelda Rd.
At the checkout counter I remind the cashier that I'm "really, really old" (5% discount to us geezers on Wednesdays) and ask for paper bags.
The paper bags and sometimes the one-cent special are given to the food pantry at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter.
And I agree that the Publix employees are generally a cheerful, helpful group.
