Alabama's three largest newspapers, including its oldest, are cutting back to a three day a week publishing schedule, and laying off an unspecified number of employees.
The Birmingham News, The Huntsville Times, and The Press-Register in Mobile announced the change today.
It is an astounding announcement, akin to a major TV station going off air except for weekdays.
Apparently there are still other shoes to fall in the earthquake that hit media with the arrival of digital and the Great Recession.
Is this just the first step toward eliminating print completely? Part of the plan calls for the Huntsville paper to be printed by the Birmingham paper. It was only a few years ago that the News and Press-Register built brand new buildings and bought new presses. Cant they survive as an on-line only entity?
Wow.

astounding indeed, and scary.
ReplyDeleteLocally, won't we soon have WAKA, WNCF, and WCOV news all under the same umbrella ... in the same building ... with the same reporters, anchors, etc?
ReplyDeleteI suspect most capital cities don't get their local TV news from only two sources.
(I know this will not be a big change in that WCOV's news is already done by WAKA.)
