I'm not even a little anti-science.
But some "discoveries' make me wonder if someone isn't fudging the facts a little. Like the photo on the right above...taken with a space telescope. The part of space it displays is so far away, the light took seven billion years to reach us.
The photo on the left is a depiction of what we're seeing---a "filament"--- in the original on the right. Right.
Read the article here and see what you think. If nothing else, it puts next month's car payment or tuition in perspective.
I love the way you keep us informed on all kinds of news, Tim. Somehow, I was ignorant of Herschel, As I read this I was at first thinking Hubble, then I googled Herschel Space Observatory when I saw it referenced in the article.
ReplyDeleteAnd then I get mind-boggled when I think about all those light-years away. The article said it takes seven billion years for the light from these star clusters to reach us, then it says the clusters will collide in "several billion years," which to me means they must have already begun to collide. It is still hard to conceive that when we look up at the stars, we are not seeing what is, we are seeing what was. The distant past is so luminously present.
Thank you Charles! Glad you enjoyed it.
