I hope that the people who argue against "special punishments"...i.e. hate crime laws...will be all over the story of the 55 year old Alabama man facing felony charges for attacking an umpire at a High School softball game.
As well as being up in arms against the statutes that make it a more serious crime with more serious time for murdering a pregnant woman or a police officer. After all, dead is dead, right?
And regarding the rampaging Granddad, that umpire doesn't need any special punishment because a beatin' is a beatin', no?

A sandlot umpire is NOT an official, except for that game. He isn't a police officer. (I agree that assaulting or killing a police officer should be dealt with very, very harshly).
