I'm all for reducing prison overcrowding. And I think the length of some of the non-violent crime sentences are out of proportion to other crimes. But is this what Alabama voters wanted when they elected a a majority GOP Senate and House and a GOP Governor?
Perhaps I just missed it, but there were committee hearings and votes on this legislation giving an un-elected body the right to shorten prison sentences, and unless the legislature approves a specific bill undoing it, the decision stands? To over-rule the judge and jury that decided the case?

After seeing whom we've elected to various offices, I've come to believe that un-elected professionals are far superior.
ReplyDeleteHey, in some Alabama counties coroners and school superintendents are elected!
