Five men* at an atomic ground zero

What were they thinking?  in July of 1957, five men volunteered to stand below as an atomic bomb was ignited above them. They apparently survived...it was a test to prove to the public that they had nothing to fear from the military using nukes against enemy (i.e. Russina) planes.
*Plus the guy filming it!
