MMMM #374 -- Rule #1 about going on a network TV program.

1)  Don't Get High First.

I don't usually watch OWN--the cable channel named after the talk show queen--but I caught an interview with rapper DMX over the weekend on one of those endless reality shows, a kind of self-help intervention show, in this case a "reunion" between the rapper and his son..and DMX was high as a kite. The part where he's twitching on something isn't included in the linked clip, nor is the part where it became so obvious he was high that even the host asked.

Anyway, have we come to expect meltdowns from celebrities? Does the combination of constant media attention and too much money invariably lead to this? No, there are plenty of stars who stay married to their mates for decades and do good works, and never spend a day in jail.

[ALSO: Smithsonian Magazine* includes a prescient article about the dangers mass media present..an article written in 1969. It envisions portable phones and even the Internet.

And one of the biggest news stories of 101 year ago was documented in some spectacular pictures, including the pictures in Smithsonian Magazine that include photos of the actual iceberg that sunk her. Whatever happened to the lifeboats? Are they in museums somewhere?]

[UPDATE: It took me about five seconds to answer my own Titanic question. The most documented tragedy before 9-11 has a wikipedia entry that says  the lifeboats were returned to the cruise line and then vanished in history. It also includes a listing of which passengers were on each lifeboat!]
