In my experience working with Alabama News Network's annual Salvation Army bell-ringer campaign, I've noticed that some of the people who give are those who appear the least likely to have money to share. Apparently that's not just my experience...PBS reports researchers have found it to be true nationally. The less well off are more likely to be generous than those with money to spare.
However, slipping a dollar or a fiver into the red kettle is a different matter than writing a check to a charity. With a check, one has a record for tax deductions.
That's also true in churches.
