There have been several attempts to regulate the payday and title loan industry in Alabama, all without success.
Some of them in Montgomery are even open 24-7!
Even when the Democrats ran the show in the Alabama Legislature, a prominent member of that party was a part owner of a chain of high-interest loan stores.
Now TimLennox.com Financial Editor Jay points to a BBC story about the Church of England going up against the places there...not by trying to regulate them out of business, but by competing with them.
Could it happen here? Which religious denomination is most or least likely to do it in the Deep South?
Actually, this concept is already operating in the US. Alabama has five of these credit unions.

Why "a prominent member" instead of "Lowell Barron?"
