The Hunley

Today is the 150th Anniversary of the sinking of the CSS Hunley, a Civil War submarine that had already killed two previous crews.
The event marked the first time a sub had sunk another ship, although the Hunley itself then went down too.

[Note: it is ironic that the anniversary falls on Presidents' Day, since there were, in one sense, two presidents the day the Hunley sank. And by the way, though it is not updated very often, those who are interested in Confederate Naval Warfare may want to visit the blog Bob Corley and I ran as we worked on a never-to-be-produced documentary about the CSS Alabama, a Confederate steam/sail warship built in England.]
