A judge has ruled the state of Indiana was being inconsistent in approving or denying custom license plates, For example, reports USA Today:
The ruling noted apparent inconsistencies in what the BMV would allow and what the agency would deny. Some examples: "SXY" was denied, but "BIGGSXY" was approved. "FOX*LIES" was denied, but "FOX NEWS" was approved. "BIBLE*H8R" was denied, but "BIBLE4ME" was approved...
The ruling came in the case of a cop who wanted the PIG tag as an ironic twist on the word usually used as a slur against police. Here in Alabama state officials have drawn up a list of prohibited tags, and then decide on a case by case if others should be permitted.
Meanwhile on the other side of the country, a motorist got a court order to approve his "COPS LIE" tag.
Here's a web site with Alabama tags that they say were approved despite that review process.
