REALLY Big Eye on The Sky

Construction has officially begun on the site of what will be the largest telescope on earth...the one they cleverly call The European Extremely Large Telescope.

Artist's rendering of the telescope in Chile

You can tell this is a European project, since there is no mention of how much it will cost in the article linked above.
Were it a US project, that would be in the first sentence...so people could start leaving crude and stupid critical comments after the story.
I do have a serious question though: have the space telescopes not replaced the earth bound ones, since they are not impacted by the planet's atmosphere?

  1. Well, the Keck in Hawai'i can do about as well as the Hubble, i think, because of its adaptive optics, diameter and elevation (http://www2.keck.hawaii.edu/optics/ao/).

It has a larger diameter than the Keck, and much newer optics, but I don't see its elevation. The next space telescope, the Webb Telescope, will be far better (and more expensive). This is still an exciting project to me.1407
