The President in and on Selma

"In one afternoon 50 years ago, so much of our turbulent history -- the stain of slavery and anguish of civil war; the yoke of segregation and tyranny of Jim Crow; the death of four little girls in Birmingham; and the dream of a Baptist preacher -- all that history met on this bridge."
                                                                      President Obama, in Selma today.

Watch the entire speech here.

  1. It was a great speech. But I noticed sadly that when the president appealed for congress to continue to protect the Voting Rights Act, everyone on the platform stood in applause except for Gov. Bentley who remained seated.

  2. It was a GOP effort to weaken the Act and remove the pre-clearance aspect of it. I did not notice if any other Republicans also stayed seated...

  3. Not surprising about Bentley.

By the way, what happened to his promise at his first State of the State adddress, when he promised to remove the sales tax on groceries, "one penny at a time?" I guess you folks in Alabama are waiting for Bentley's first time.

Folks here in Maryland are flabbergasted wen I tell them that there is full sales tax on groceries in Sweet Home Alabama.
