This may be the only photo of Lincoln at Gettysburg |
Today is the 150th anniversary of the shooting of President Abraham Lincoln, days after the end of the Civil War. He died the next morning.
Within days the authorities had identified several conspirators, including John Wilkes Booth.
There will be many ceremonies marking the anniversary. A life sized rail car almost identical to the one that carried his body across the country will retrace that trip via highways today, and special
memorials are set for many places, including Ford's Theater in Washington where he was shot.
There will also be a celebration of the murder, at least that is what The League of The South promised earlier this year.
There are probably tens of thousands of article being written about today's anniversary. May I point to a three I think have exceptional content and thought?
- In The Atlantic:The story headlined John Wilkes Booth and The Higher Law.
- The Original Associated Press report on the shooting, which fails to mention the president being shot till the third paragraph!
- The New York Times story headlined The Remains From Lincoln's Last Day.
