Sunday Focus: The Last Slave

The L.A. Times reports on a small, and getting smaller, South Alabama community called "Africatown" in a story over the weekend.
Many Alabamians will likely already know most of what is in the story, but it is still worth a read, including details about the last African slave imported to the U.S. by slave ship, in 1860 as the U.S. Civil War loomed.

Judjo Lewis died in 1935. He was the last survivor of the last slave ship from Africa to the U.S.

After they were freed, the slaves who had been carried to the U.S. on the ship gathered in an industrial area of Mobile. They were eventually given permission by Alabama Power to farm the land under the power lines...though it seems that farming would have started before the lines were even there.
