The AMA famously signed up then-actor Ronald Reagan to campaign against Medicare.
I was ten years old, and I still remember my Dad saying, "The government does not need to get involved in healthcare!' I also remember years later when no one was happier with Medicare than my Dad, once he became a recipient. He bragged about the care he and my Mom both received. I often hold that out as a lesson for today's naysayers who shudder the thought of a civilized single payer plan.
