There are 811 families in Alabama living in Public Housing, but making more money than is allowed under HUD guidelines. That ranks Alabama 4th in the nation.
The number nationally is 25,226.
Yet, according to a Washington Post article, public housing officials have no plans to force them to move, and in fact want them to stay.
The newspaper reports some extreme examples:
A family of four in New York City makes $497,911 a year but pays $1,574 a month to live in public housing in a three-bedroom apartment subsidized by taxpayers.More than half of the over income families in the report are over the limit by less than $10,000 a year....and there are 1.1 million families living in public housing in the U.S.
The story is based on an audit by HUD itself, and does not include any specifics for Alabama's Public Housing residents.
