The rest of the world was starting to look a bit like The United States in recent years----English is the world language now, American cultural exports, movie, TV, music, rule the globe. Democracy flourishes when not stomped to death by dictators and strongmen, some of them put in power by U.S.
Then there are the stark reminders that the rest of the world is more different than alike. Here it is 2015:
- In the largest democracy on the globe, India, five women have been dragged from their homes and beaten to death because the neighbors thought they were witches and responsible for some bad events.
- Not far away, in Bangladesh, decidedly not a democracy, a fourth blogger has been hacked to death because their material was not religious enough.
All four men killed were on a list of 84 "atheist bloggers" drawn up by Islamic groups in 2013 and widely circulated.
- And the good people of ISIS apparently think the world needs more evidence that the are pure evil with no redeeming characteristics. They have now executed 19 women who refused to have sex with them...i.e....did not agree to be raped.
It is almost enough to make a sane person give up any hope for the future.
And yes, I know there are horrible events here as well, but they seem to be countered and halted quickly.
