Sunday Focus: Radney Rule* Bites Artur Davis

The Alabama Democratic Party says Davis can not run again as a Democrat....at least not anytime soon. The Montgomery Advertiser has the story.

Davis ran as a Democrat for Alabama Governor and lost. He then became a Republican and moved to Virginia, intending to run for Congress in that state. He never did.
Davis moved back to Montgomery and ran against Mayor Tod Strange in a non-partisan election. He lost his race for Mayor and announced he would run as a Democrat for the Montgomery County Commission.
Now the Democrats say they won't allow that.

Tom Radney

*The rule is named after Tom Radney, a longtime party activist who died in 2011.

Political parties have to maintain party discipline, including being gatekeepers to make sure only true party members run under the party banner.
Davis says he will be in court this week to challenge the party ruling.
If the court rejects the challenge, the question may be whether Davis, who fought hard to be a Democrat, will be welcomed back by the GOP to run as a Republican.

(George Wallace used to say there wasn't "a dime's worth of difference" between the Democrats and the Republicans. So maybe it really doesn't make a difference which party banner Davis runs under.)
