It was NOT fake news, but it was bizarre. It's what's called a "kicker" story....usually at the end of a newscast or news segment. And it told the story of a couple in Ohio who "created" the thing.
Jasen and Amanda Dixon got flack for it too,of course. I mean. the entire message of a nativity scene is that the child is ALIVE.
One good thing that came out of it is an Atlantic Magazine story:
Your Christmas Nativity Scene Is a Lie
There probably weren’t three kings. And Jesus wasn't blond
That's true enough, but like the Ohio Zombie couple, it too misses the point. Christians imagine the scene through their own cultural eyes, skin color and all. And nitpicking the details is an exercise in futility. They believe, regardless of distortions that may have cropped up over the centuries.
It's like the myth that Interstate Highways were built at a certain width to allow planes to land on them...an urban myth that grew into involvement by the U.N. (so they can come take our guns away). It's not true, but the U.S. Department of Transportation no longer goes out of its way to set the record straight. People will believe what they believe when something is repeated often enough (think political candidates).
For a long time there have been rumors reported as fact online (I know, shocking!) about Dearborn, Michigan. Read THIS story on MSN.com about this FAKE FAKE FAKE church sign.

FAKE FAKE FAKE FAKE SIGN |
(It was an ANTI-ISIS demonstration).Facebook post, Dec. 7: This is Dearborn Michigan after the radical Islamic attack in California! These are Isis flags and Isis supporters folks but the media has not reported because of politically correctnessThis is completely false. The media did report on the rally, which wasn’t anything as it was described in that Facebook post.
Shades of those thousands of New Jersey Muslims celebrating the 9-11 attacks.
PLUS: There was no shortage of company fails in the about-to-end year. HERE is a list of one professional's list of the top ten.
AND: The NY Times has replaced the "Public Editor", which columnist refers to as perhaps the worst job...anywhere.
