As previously posted, there has been talk of expelling Roy Moore if he is elected to the U.S. Senate by Alabama voters.
It would take a 2/3 vote for that to happen.
The U.S. Senate website offers some interesting historical instances when the Senators considered expelling a member:
Alabama Confederate monument, before flag removal. |
Since 1789, the Senate has expelled only fifteen of its entire membership. Of that number, fourteen were charged with support of the Confederacy during the Civil War.
Presuming all of the Democrats in the Senate vote to expel, 19 Republicans would have to agree. What happens then?
It could be Roy Moore Deja vu all over again.
Alabama Supreme Court Courtroom |
And now? If The U.S. Senate votes to expel Moore, Governor Kay Ivey would be under pressure to appoint him to the post again and to schedule another election....etc etc etc.unless the Senate voted again to expel....
I don't know if Moore would be able to vote as a U.S. Senator under those circumstances.
