MMMM 586 --- The REAL Fake Media

The partisan effort to do an end run around the traditional mass media continues, with memo-writer Devi Nunes creating his own news website, though at first glance it appears to be just another conservative news outlet.
Mother Jones magazine has the story.

"... the website is paid for by Nunes’ campaign committee, according to small print at the bottom of the site. Leading the home page this week: A photograph of Nunes over the headline: “Understanding the process behind #ReleaseTheMemo.”
 eyer

That's reminiscent of the "Alabama News Center" site that appears to be an unbiased site reporting stories. But there too, there is a disclaimer if you search for it---disclosing the site is "developed by Alabama Power."

The power company and Nunes have just as much right to create their own site and write their own news as anyone, but both should clearly--in bold face---identity the bias that comes with those sites.
Another example of grey area publishing is the magazine Leaps--it reports on medical issues and is published by Beyer
The story was first reported by UnDark.org*
"LeapsMag is launching at a time when the lines between journalism and sponsored content can sometimes seem to be blurring. While the magazine’s creators insist that they want to publish journalism, they may not be able to avoid occupying a gray zone, somewhere on the borders between journalism and native advertising."

I looked across the site but could not find any reference to it being produced by Beyer.

ALSO: Rolling Stone reports:
Last week, several high-ranking editors and veteran reporters were fired from Newsweek, following a January 19th raid of their New York City office by the Manhattan District Attorney as part of an investigation into the publication's finances. The nearly 85-year-old magazine, as well as the International Business Times, are both owned by the Newsweek Media Group, which reportedly has connections to Olivet University – a small, evangelical Bible college in San Francisco – as well as a fringe Christian sect known as "The Community."

Newsweek? Really?
