On This Date....

...in 1956....The "Southern Manifesto"  was signed by the entire Alabama Congressional Delegation...and about 100 members of Congress in all,  mostly from Southern States . They were displaying their opposition to The U.S. Supreme Court's 1955 Brown v The Board of Education decision that desegregated public schools.
    Both U.S. Senators and all nine members of the House from Alabama signed it. 

Ironically Justice Hugo Black voted with the majority for the decision----Hugo Black of Alabama, who later voted to declare organized prayer in public schools unconstitutional. He became a pariah in the state, and is still considered one by some Alabamians.
