Russ Solomon's Obit is in The New York Times thought I am sure it will be everywhere by the morning.
Mr. Solomon was the driving force behind a sprawling enterprise that began with one store in that city (Sacramento) in 1960 and grew into a dominant competitor in music retailing with nearly 200 stores in 15 countries. Sales of recorded music, videos and books eventually topped $1 billion a year.
I never went to Tower records, but felt the chain's influence during my years in music radio. Their store in The Village in NYC opened in 1983..seven years after I had moved to Alabama.
A great documentary about the chain is out. Title: All Things Must Pass: The Rise and Fall of Tower Records
RIP.
