As I remember, it was put on as some kind of entertainment. I'm not positive it was pie eating event...but the idea was to eat a lot of something quickly....and I immediately felt repulsed by the prospect of eating as entertainment, amid the starvation that existed across Vietnam.

I thought of it as I read a NY Times story
about famine in Yemen, and reporters eating well between venturing back into the abyss:
Reporters find themselves in these kind of dilemmas...what to do? It also reminded me of the Alabama reporters confronted by a man who had set himself on fire.Put him out? Keep the video running?
