The first Drive-in theater opened 86 years ago today. At one point there were many hundreds of them, now relatively few survive.
One was the Montgomery Drive-In across from the current campus of Falkner University on Atlanta Highway. It opened in August of 1946!
I have not been able to find the name of this drive-in on West Fairview Avenue, but the distinctive curved parking pattern is unmistakable in this Google Earth shot:
UPDATE: Here is is back in the day...MUCH bigger than I expected, if it is in fact the same theater:
That larger photo came from the Facebook group "TimesGoneBy2, to which I belong.
Another old drive-in is much more visible in Clanton, and it is included in this wavemarker site.
New Jersey businessman Richard M. Hollingshead Jr. reportedly bought a 40x50 ft. screen and two six-foot speakers to open the first ever drive-in in Camden, N.J.
He charged 25-cents.
You'll pay more to get into the eight drive-ins currently open in Alabama
