Texas Bans Red Light Cameras

There are a dozen red-light cameras in the city of Montgomery, as well as some in Selma, Birmingham and Tuscaloosa.

Now the State of Texas is banning them.

"The use of red-light cameras in the United States started in New York City, which tested one in 1992 and then turned on more of them over the years. Other state and city governments gradually adopted them, and in 2018 there were about 400 communities in the United States that operated red-light camera programs, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety."

The City of Opelika decided not to renew it's contract with the company that makes and maintains the ticketing systems.
City officials said the red light cameras were unpopular with citizens.

Even more unpopular were the speed cameras. Montgomery stopped using them after the legislature banned them in 2016.

Alabama Legislators debated but ultimately rejected legislation banning the red-light cameras statewide in 2018.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says
"more red-light cameras have been discontinued than added since 2012.
