Montgomery's Southern Boulevard Death Zone

Another pedestrian has been struck by a car and killed near a stretch of the Southern Boulevard targeted by the State Department of Transportation for multi-million dollar improvements.

Montgomery police identify the victim as 59 year old Clarlene Shuford. She was struck on July third and pronounced dead the next day. No charges are expected against the driver.

The state started working on the stretch of Southern Boulevard East of I-65 in March, adding crosswalks and electronic crossing signs on a stretch of the Southern Boulevard where there have been multiple pedestrian accidents before the most recent one.

They're also adding sidewalks on both sides of the boulevard near I-65 and Davenport Drive.

The area is near the Greyhound Bus Station on one side of the Boulevard and several fast-food restaurants and hotels on the other.

The most recent death occurred close to the Mobile Highway, on the Southern Boulevard west of I-65. The number of pedestrian deaths has been increasing nationally:

The group Smart Growth America says it is not people talking on cell phones that contributes to the increase in pedestrian deaths. Their website has extensive statistical data.
