From a NY Times story:
That seemingly simple equation that ricocheted across the internet recently was neither useful nor elegant. By now, you’ve likely seen it:
8 ÷ 2(2+2) = ?
Actually no, I had not seen it, and now that I have, I can only react with a WTF?
They may as well have written it in Klingon.
I hated math from pre-K till I graduated from High School and went off to find something I could do to make money (without having to actually count that money, at least not too often!)
Note there is NO Math being taught in this photo! |
I spoke about my math phobia with an actual math teacher recently. John Graetz is a son of Montgomery Rev. Robert and Jeannie Graetz recently, and although I tried to show interest, my eyes glazed over after he quoted the first equation.
I suggested I would have gotten over my fear if I had just had access to an electronic calculator in those early school years, but he suggested that most math classes allow them now, but only in a limited way because they want students to know WHY
a+c-bb+2 = xrs4
Those of you paying attention probably know I completely made up that last math-appearing string of letters and numbers (John Graetz certainly does!)
But the formula in The N.Y. Times article appears as though I could have made it up too! Such is the life of a Senior Citizen math phobic.
