Take a Stand!

This was supposed to be the location of a statue of the Revolutionary War General for whom Montgomery is named, but there were complaints that General Richard Montgomery was a slave owner, so city decided to move his statue to the park across from city hall, rather and position him within feet of the place where slaves were sold.
SO what is the purpose of the empty base?
Said a city spokesman:  "it’s there for the people. Montgomery is a reflection of our people, so why not have a pedestal upon which they can stand, take selfies, etc. It is also serving as a bit of a unique attraction for the influx of tourists to take a memento or photo home!"

Personally, I think a statue of Dr. King would be a better use of it, but King's former church is finishing up the job of building a statue of him to be placed in front of the church at the other end of Dexter Avenue, so it might be repetitive.
